Product launch video template: the shot structure that works
Most product launch videos that hold attention follow the same skeleton. It is short, it names a problem before it names the product, and it spends most of its time on two or three concrete things the product does. This guide lays out that structure for a 30-second cut, with durations and tips for each beat, so you can script your own or hand it to LaunchReel AI as the starting point.
The shot structure
- 01
Hook0–3 s
Stop the scroll with a single, specific line the viewer recognizes.
- Write it as the viewer's own thought, not your tagline.
- Use motion in the first half-second; feeds autoplay muted.
- Keep it under eight words so it reads in one glance.
- 02
Problem3–6 s
Show the cost of the status quo in one visual.
- One problem only. A list of pains reads as noise.
- Show it, for example a messy spreadsheet or a failing build, instead of describing it.
- 03
Reveal6–9 s
Introduce the product name and logo as the answer.
- Use your real logo, colors and typeface so the brand is recognizable later.
- Pair the name with a one-line description of what it is.
- 04
Three feature beats9–24 s (about 5 s each)
Prove the claim with three concrete things the product does, each on a real screen.
- One feature per shot, one caption per feature.
- Zoom into the part of the screenshot that matters; full screens are unreadable on phones.
- Order them by how often a user would need them, not by how hard they were to build.
- 05
Proof or social-ready detail24–27 s
Give one reason to believe: an integration list, a platform badge, a number you already publish.
- Only use facts that are true and public today.
- If you have nothing yet, show availability instead: platforms, free tier, open source license.
- 06
CTA and end card27–30 s
Tell the viewer exactly where to go.
- One action and one URL. Hold the end card long enough to read.
- Match the end card to the page the link lands on.
Stretching the template to 60 seconds
For a 60-second cut, keep the hook, problem and reveal the same length and give the extra time to the middle: four or five feature beats, or one short workflow shown end to end. Do not slow the opening down; the first six seconds decide whether anyone sees the rest.
Common mistakes
Most weak launch videos fail in predictable ways:
- Opening on the logo, which gives the viewer no reason to keep watching
- Full-screen UI captures where no text is readable at phone size
- Captions that repeat the feature name instead of the benefit
- A different look from the website the viewer lands on
Using this template with LaunchReel AI
When you send us your URL, this is the structure the storyboard starts from. We fill each beat from your site and screenshots, you confirm the brief and the storyboard, and each shot can be revised on its own. For product-specific variants see SaaS explainer videos and GitHub to video, or compare it with the app demo video template. Your first brief, storyboard and watermarked preview are free; credit prices are on the pricing page.
Worked example
- 01 · 0:00–0:03Cluttered inbox scrolls quickly, then freezes.“Your feedback is buried in 300 emails”
- 02 · 0:03–0:06Sticky notes and spreadsheet rows pile up and blur.“And nobody knows what to build next”
- 03 · 0:06–0:09Logo resolves on the brand background with a one-line descriptor.“Signalboard: every request in one place”
- 04 · 0:09–0:14Screenshot of the inbox view; requests slide into tagged columns.“Collect feedback from every channel”
- 05 · 0:14–0:19Zoom on a vote counter ticking up on one request card.“See what customers ask for most”
- 06 · 0:19–0:24Roadmap view; a card moves from 'Planned' to 'Shipped'.“Close the loop when you ship”
- 07 · 0:24–0:27Row of integration names appears under the product window.“Connects to the tools you already use”
- 08 · 0:27–0:30End card with logo, URL and a single button.“Try it free · signalboard.example”
Questions
How long should a product launch video be?
Thirty seconds suits social feeds and launch posts. Sixty seconds works on a homepage or in a launch-day email where viewers have chosen to watch.
Do I need a voice-over?
Not for most launch videos. Many viewers watch muted, so clear captions carry the message and music sets the pace.
What if I have no metrics or customers yet?
Skip invented proof. Use the proof beat for availability: supported platforms, a free tier, an open source license, or a launch-week offer.
