App demo video template: show one task from start to finish
A launch video sells the idea. An app demo video shows how the product is used. The most effective walkthroughs follow one person completing one real task, screen by screen, at a pace a new user could follow. This template breaks that walkthrough into beats with timings for a 60-second cut, and it works for web apps, mobile apps and browser extensions. It is the structure LaunchReel AI uses for demo-style videos.
The shot structure
- 01
Context0–5 s
Say who the user is and what they are trying to get done.
- Name the task, not the product: 'Plan a team offsite in 10 minutes'.
- Show the starting state, such as an empty project or a blank form.
- 02
Entry point5–12 s
Show where the task starts: the button, the menu or the first screen.
- Highlight the exact element the user taps or clicks.
- Keep the cursor or finger movement slow enough to follow.
- 03
Core steps12–42 s (three to four steps)
Walk through the task in the order a real user does it.
- One step per shot, with a caption that names the action.
- Skip loading states and settings screens that do not change the outcome.
- Crop or zoom so the relevant control fills a readable part of the frame.
- 04
Result42–50 s
Show the finished outcome clearly: the sent invoice, the published page, the saved plan.
- Hold on the result for a beat longer than feels necessary.
- If there is a share or export step, end on what the recipient sees.
- 05
Extras50–55 s
Mention one or two related capabilities in quick cuts.
- Keep each extra to a single caption and screen.
- Pick extras that a viewer who liked the main task would want next.
- 06
Call to action55–60 s
Point to where the viewer can try it.
- Use the store badges or signup URL that matches your audience.
- Keep the end card consistent with your app icon and colors.
Demo video vs. launch video
The product launch video template is built for attention: a hook, a reveal and three quick feature beats. An app demo video is built for understanding. It is slower, follows one continuous task, and works best on a homepage, in onboarding emails, in a help center or on a store listing where the viewer already cares.
Choosing the task to show
Pick the task that a new user does in their first session and that shows why the app exists. If it takes more than five steps in real life, show the first two and the result.
- Use realistic sample data, not 'Test 1' and 'asdf'
- Keep the same sample content throughout the walkthrough
- Remove personal data from screenshots before sending them
Adapting it to your product
For phone apps, deliver the 9:16 cut first; see app demo videos for mobile apps. For browser add-ons, the entry point is the toolbar icon; see Chrome extension demo videos. With LaunchReel AI your first storyboard and watermarked preview are free, and a clean 1080p export plus a 9:16 version costs 15 credits; packs start at $9 on the pricing page.

Questions
How long should an app demo video be?
Between 45 and 90 seconds for a full walkthrough. For social feeds, cut the same structure down to 30 seconds by keeping the entry point, two core steps and the result.
Should I screen-record or use screenshots?
Screen recordings capture every stutter and notification. Animating clean screenshots gives you control over pacing and keeps text sharp, and each shot can be updated on its own.
Can one demo video cover several features?
It works better to follow one task and mention other features briefly at the end. For several unrelated tasks, make several short videos.
